Actually, I have read the opposite (in the biography of the pilot who led the Pearl Harbor attack). He stated that the fleets in the SW Pacific and Indian Ocean were pulled back to ensure the safety of the home islands--at a critical time when the US and UK had next to nothing with which to oppose them.

My wife and I went yesterday (Friday the 18th) to Fairfield for the Reunion. There was a gala that evening with Cliff Robertson (we didn't go $300 each) but we went to the gift store and the meet and greet autograph session with nine of the Raiders. Doolittle's son John was there and the wife of Ted Lawson (who wrote Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo) was there as well. Amazing to see those heroes.
