Thanks Sam. Interesting information.
I have purposefully not taken much advantage of Vet benefits since mustering out in 1973 after 10 years active duty. Now 30 plus years later I am experiencing some fairly servere problems as a result of an injury sustained in RVN. I have just started the process of record gathering towards filing for some bennies. I sure hope I don't run into the typical burocrat obstinate attitude that my wife and I have encountered with other government agencies through the years. Time will tell.

Get one of the veteran organizations on your side, they can cut through some of the red tape. I haven't dealt with the VA since the late 80's when I was very active with AmVets.
