Sergeant First Class Nelson V. Brittin, I Company, 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, became the US Armys thirty-fifth Korean War Medal of Honor recipient. Leading his squad up a hill under murderous enemy fire, he was wounded while grenading an enemy position. Refusing medical attention, he replenished his supply of grenades and returned to the assault. When his weapon jammed, he leaped into a foxhole and killed the occupants with his bayonet and rifle butt. He continued to wipe out foxholes and knocked out a machinegun nest with grenades and rifle fire. His squad under fire from another machinegun with supporting riflemen, he unhesitatingly charged the position where he was killed instantly by a burst of automatic fire. In his sustained and driving action, he had killed more than twenty of the enemy and destroyed four automatic weapons, inspiring his company to attain its objective.
