Hi Spooky. Once again the troops paid for the politicians decisions to gut the military.

Agreed the USA was totally unprepared for war in 1941 and relief of the Philipines was impossible. That is why I couched my comments the way I did about McAurthur. A force trapped on Battan in the summer of 1942 would have been isolated and unable to be relived and there might have been too much pressure to try to get them some succor thus losing critical assetts that were needed in the Solomons and Central Pacific. Still my study of Douglas McAuthur indicates to me that he always regretted this action.

Bumping this.
To all Bataan survivors, and to everyone who fought the Japs, words cannot express my gratitude.
God bless you all.

If Bataan and Corrigedor had help out longer it would have tied up some of the Japanese forces and may have slowed their advance south depending on whether they decided to just isolate the forces or reduce them.
I think they would have to try to reduce Bataan because as long as they didn't Manila was pretty much useless to them.

My wife's grandfather still doesn't speak much at all about what happened over there, but we have pieced together a little bit of imformation in the years.
Pete, to our knowledge, was never in prisoner camps. From what we have been told, he was helping natives fight the Japanese with guerilla tactics and what not. The only thing that I can positively say he's disclosed is that he isn't looking forward to standing before God and trying to explain what he did. His wife has tried on many occasions to have him divulge on what happened, but the man has a will of iron and won't say a word. From what we can tell, he doesn't want to relive a bit of it.
We are all, to say the very least, immensly proud of Pete and his strength, as we are all the men and women who have seen the horrors of war as he has...

Unfortunately it's locked...That is a problem- sometimes when I run across an especially interesting old post I will copy & repost it, but it's too easy to just let them slide. I wish we could still bump some of the good old stuff.

This person - O'Donnell - they found Japanese currency on him and that's what the repercussions were. (He) dug his own grave and then they killed him and put him in it."

You did a great job as usual. I sent my hubby the Aleutians thread so he could see it. I think you have a new lurker! I told him to keep checking the Foxhole.

To be removed from this list, send me a blank private reply with "REMOVE" in the subject line. Thanks!I do not spend nearly enough time in the Foxhole, but I appreciate the obvious effort, and I explicitly don't won't to be removed.
Thanks and FRegards to all.
