The core of the problem with DDT is not just the specific compound but also the unhealthy byproducts that accompany its synthesis like dioxin and those that result from DDT's breakdown in the environment. In addition, DDT and related compounds and other compounds tend to bioaccumulate as persistent organic pollutants with a wide range of ill effects.

Run Internet and Pubmed searches under "DDT Lake Apopka pollutants" for a sense of the issue. The ill effects are well-proven of DDT and similar endocrine disrupting compounds on the alligator population of Lake Apopka and in other contexts.

As for pesticide use in the Panama Canal Zone, you might take a look at the following professional study, among others. Long-Term Environmental Impacts of Pesticide and Herbicide Use in Panama Canal Zone.

"DDT Lake Apopka pollutants" for a sense of the issue.

Using a one time event involving a local, concentrated spill to justify the banning of a substance that has never been PROVEN to be hazardous to humans or animals is the equivalent of banning oil following the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

From another article from the National Library of Medicine: "Although we provide evidence to suggest that DDT and DDE may pose a risk to human health, we also highlight the lack of knowledge about human exposure and health effects in communities where DDT is currently being sprayed for malaria control.

We recommend research to address this gap and to develop safe and effective alternatives to DDT.

It's been 53 years since the EPA banned DDT, and it still has not been proven to be toxic to humans.

The global warming zealots use the same buzzwords "evidence suggests", "may pose a risk", which are all assumptions.

The scientific method says it is impossible to prove an assumption is true, but only one false prediction proves an assumption is false.

Actually, I thought as you do for many years. Then I spent a week and reviewed in detail the professional medical literature. I saw growing evidence of adverse environmental and human health effects due to exposure to DDT and its associated compounds and to other persistent organic pollutants. I cannot intellectually convince you otherwise though if you reject the evidence.

Nevertheless, I am fairly certain that you would not be willing to sprinkle a dusting of DDT and other pesticides and chemical compounds on your cornflakes in the morning. As a matter of principle, I hope that you would not think it acceptable that DDT and other pesticides and chemical pollutants are now widely in the environment and everyone's food without their consent.
