Having a wife that is going through menopause right now I can say this is not my experience at all but my wife never took birth control. I think that (birth control) is very hard on a woman. I suppose it could be a factor.
My wife has been he hot flashes but she handles that pretty good.
Our intimacy has not suffered at all. We have been married for 30 years.
My wife is in great health, works out daily, watches her diet closely and still has the figure she had 30 years ago.
I posted this response to offer the other story for the those preparing to enter this stage of their lives.

Maybe that’s a man’s point of view. Speaking for myself, I wouldn’t return to pre-menopause days for anything.
Maybe it depends on the definition of “destroyed”.
