Stone Lake Museum to present talk about B-52 crash Paul Mitchell Jul 9, 2018
Russ Voight (above) hangs a replica in the Stone Lake Historical Society Museum of the B-52 bomber which he built in commemoration of the crash of a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber southeast of Stone Lake while on a training mission in November, 1966. Voight served in the Strategic Air Command and worked on B-52s, which are 160 feet long and have a 185-foot wing span. Sybert will present a program about the crash at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at the Stone Lake Lions Community Center.
Paul Mitchell Facebook Twitter Email Print Save On Nov. 18, 1966, an Air Force B-52 with nine crew on board crashed in the Stone Lake area. To commemorate the incident, the Stone Lake Area Historical Society will host speaker Tom Sybert, who will present an illustrated talk about the historic accident at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at the Stone Lake Lions Hall.
Sybert has done extensive research on the crash and has been able to contact many of the victims’ families. He will provide a memorial booklet containing recollections of local people who lived in Stone Lake in 1966. Several families of the victims will also be present.
advertisement Last year Sybert made and installed a special memorial plaque at the site of the crash. He now has made a replica of the memorial, which he will install in the memorial garden at the Stone Lake Museum. In addition, Russ Voigt, an expert on B-52s who has assisted Sybert with his research, has constructed a large, scale model replica of a B-52, which also will be hung in the Stone Lake Museum.
The public is invited to enjoy an interesting evening of local history. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. The Stone Lake Area Museum Complex will be open before this event so guests can view the crash debris, the memorial plaque and the scale model B-52 on display.
