Veterans were among the group gathered Saturday morning at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on Lyons View Pike to place 350 Christmas wreaths on grave markers as a part of Wreaths Across America.
The national program is an effort to decorate 131 Department of Veterans Affairs national cemeteries, state Veteran cemeteries, Arlington National Cemetery and other memorial sites.

They place 12,000 wreaths every year at the Fort Smith National Cemetery. The Cub Scouts from my kids’ Catholic school show up to help (unfortuately, my Bear Cub wasn’t one of them—prior commitments). They spend a whole day before the wreath-laying just staging the wreaths for placement. It’s pretty impressive.

I wish I had known about this event ahead of time. My father-in-law rests at this cemetery. I would have loved to participate in such a nice gesture for our veterans. Will get involved next year for sure.
