Thursday Morning Greetings to the denizens of the Freeper Foxhole. I am back from my road trip to Mobile to visit my brother and his outfit. I put 1700 miles on Dad's car and 500 miles on my truck.

Made it by the USS Alabama in Mobile. Did not get to tour the ship as Dad's legs were bothering him. No problem there as I will get back to Mobile again. Also went over to the Naval Avaition Musuem in Pensacola. Pretty nice place the Naval Aviators have. Several interesting types of aircraft are hanging around the musuem, and I mean that litteraly!!!

Dad and I didn't do too much in Mobile mainly visitied with my brother and his family. Lots to see there so maybe that will be next years vacation.

On the way back to St Louis we stopped in Vicksburg to check out the Vicksburg National Miltary Park. Also in the Park is the USS Cairo Musuem. The Cairo was a Carondolet City Class gunbaot that was sunk in the Yazoo river by a torpedo, aka mine, in December of 1862. The ship was raised in 1965 IIRC. I have a book on the Cairo called "Hard Luck Ironcald".

The Park has about a 16 mile drive through it with a number of stops where you can get out and view the area. The two most impressive, in my opinion were stop #1, Degoylers Battery and #3 Third Lousianna Redan. From Degoyler's Battery you had a really good view of the Third Louisanna Redan. It did not take much imagination to go back to 1863 and the fight for Vicksburg.

At the Third Louisanna Redan stop you can see the remmnant of the mine that Union forces fired on June 24,1863. Fighting was fierce for over a day before the Union forces pulled back. Throughout the park the Union positions are marked with blue and white signs and the Confederate positions are denoted with red and white signs. For more info onn the Park Tour you can go to (Vicksburg Tour)

Well I have to get going will be back later.

Regards
