If U.S. territories are included, the first sunrise on January 1 is at at 19:27 (12/31)UT or 7:27 local time at Peacock Pt. (19° 16' N 166° 35' E) on Wake Island. However, aside from the occasional government employee or contractor, Wake Island is uninhabited. The first inhabited land in the U.S. where the sunrise will occur is at 20:44 (12/31) UT or 6:44 AM local time in Guam at Inarajan (13° 17' N 144° 45' E). The Sun will first the peak of Lamlam Mountain, Guam three minutes earlier at 6:41 local time. If the territories are not included the earliest sunrise is nearly fifteen and a half hours later at 12:04 UT or 7:04 EST at the summit of Cadillac Mountain, Maine (44° 21' N 68° 13' W). The earliest sunrise at sea level occurs at 12:06 UT or 7:06 EST at Lubec, Maine (44° 50' N 67° 0' W) and Siasconset, Massachusetts (41° 15' N 69° 58' W) on Nantucket Island. For those who thought it would be the peak of Katahdin Mountain, Maine, the Sun rises there 1 minute later at 12:07 UT or 7:07 EST. The first major metropolitan area in the United States to see the Sun rise is Miami Beach, Florida (25° 47'N 80° 16'W) at 7:07 EST, the same time as the sunrise at the summit of Katahdin Mountain, Maine.
