An X-pen is like a short, portable fence that people who show dogs use to keep them corralled. They are used more for puppies and small dogs. I'm not sure if a large dog, unless trained from puppyhood, would stay in one. The crate, if large enough and has a towel and chewy in it, should work too. That way the puppy can be near you, but not underfoot, or worse, scooting out the door.

This pup will be 5 months old on December 4th, he would knock the thing over he's so big and strong and not well behaved. He does stay in his large pet crate though without much fuss at all. He'll even lay in it to take a nap with the door open so I guess he's getting better.
