Hi everyone. A sad post today for the southrons. IMHO splitting the South along the Mississippi Valley was a mortal blow to the Confederacy.

I hope ya'll have a great weekend.

"As the Vicksburg campaign proves, Grant was was master of strategic and tactical maneuver. IMHO, the Vicksburg campaign was the most brilliant ever executed on American soil."

Amen to that.

For those interested (and unfamiliar with events) J.F.C. Fuller spent some time on the Vicksburg campaign in his

and his The Generalship of Ulysses S. Grant

I lack the stamina tonight to hand copy any real details.

The maskirovka, the strategic deception, was of absolutely the very highest quality. I have high regard for his deceptive manuever on the eastern bank, call it tactical maskirovka, and his logistics as well. Grant at Vicksburg used his interior lines even better than Robert Edward Lee, I think.

Of course, he had truly wonderful troops, including two of my uncles. They did not survive.

Don't know how you all feel about poetry. I find some of it to my taste. This is written by Richard Lovelace, killed fighting for King and Country in 1643.

I have no records of my relatives in his war. I will have to wait until later to ask them about it.

To Lucasta, Going To The Wars

Tell me not (Sweet) I am unkind,
That from the nunnery
Of thy chaste breast and quiet mind
To war and arms I fly.

True, a new mistress now I chase,
The first foe in the field;
And with a stronger faith embrace
A sword, a horse, a shield.

Yet this inconstancy is such
As you too shall adore;
I could not love thee (Dear) so much,
Lov'd I not Honour more.
