1968 Battle between students & troops in Paris France, 1000 injured

Imagine the carnage among the troops had the students actually been armed.

Hopefully you are staying off your knee and this provides some reading material while you obey doctors orders. :-)

~sigh~ I so wish I were able to stay off my knee all I need to. I'm going slowly - but having to get things done still. It's hurting. hehehe... so I have laid my rear down to rest it for an hour or so. Such a bad time to have to be moving with this bum knee!

I like this topic today... not finished by any means, just started some but it's good and interesting!

Great post. Such powerful stories.

60 years later it is still a good thing to contemplate the millions of lives that were ripped apart by Hitler's monomaniacal ambitions of conquest.

And 60 years later fascism is still alive in the Middle East, but most Europeans think that's just fine. The greatest war in history produced no lasting lessons for many people.

How easily they forget.

I thought it would be good to revisit this old thread Sam did as I prepare to "revisit" the anniversary of VE-Day this Sunday.

When the West started kissing up to Stalin late in the war, the ideals we were fighting for were thrown away by FDR and Churchill. We subsituted one mass murderer for another and traded one set of occupied countries for another.

I saw on another thread Pooty-Poot is saying the Sov's never annexed the Baltic's. What a hoot! That guy sounds more an more like an old time Sov every day.

European spines were a little stiffer when they faced the Red Army in Eastern Europe. Now that the Cold War is over, they don't think anything is worth fighting for.

I'm sure the Baltic states and Eastern Europe have a different opinion < /sarcasm>

Thank you for the excellent selection of memoirs.

We have been treated to a series of increasingly insane pronunciamentos by Comrade Putin.

The most recent being his denial the Soviet Union annexed Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.

When Colin Ferguson killed six and wounded nineteen on the Long Island Railway in 1993 and went on to claim he was innocent and framed we were certain we had seen the limit of a diseased mind blocking guilt of the blackest crime.

And now Vlad the Communist denier has bested Ferguson for the title.

Hitler and Stalin were coconspirators in the crime of that century; they had a falling out as criminals are wont to do, yet the tens of millions of victims' deaths are upon their yoked heads.

We are still in peril: Putin aids Khamenei and Khatami and the rest of the mad mullahs in their pursuit of the bomb.

When the Iranian congress voted unanimously last September to resume enrichment, it chanted in unison, "Death to America! Death to Israel!"

So it is that the hydra-headed enemy of World War II remains poised to murder us.

And the most aware sentinels of the current scene are the descendants of Poland's brutalization and the agents of its rise like a Phoenix.

We shall not allow Blair, Schroeder and Cherac to be Chamberlain at Munich.

We demand of the Ayatollah and his KGB benefactor, "What part of 'never again' do you not understand?"
