Good afternoon, Foxhole
Wow. Men at war on skis. The more you learn, the more you realize you don't know.
Here's to another excellent thread.

In the words of my father-in-law, Antti Olavi Pönkänen, who fought in this war: "Our lakes are full of dead Russians." The Finns were indeed overwhelmed by the huge numbers opposing them.
In the words of one observer/participant of that period:
So many Russians! Where will we bury them all....

one of the quotes from an official report by a General of the Red Army (i can't remember his name- Russian names are really HARD for me for some reason or other, which is why WAR & PEACE is NOT one of my favorite novels) Every time I get stuck on a Russian name when dealing with a MilHistory student on some point, I just refer to *General Kaopectate* and drive on.

Evening Grace Folks~
Truly a very unpublicized and costly war. What a tough pill for the Finns to swallow in giving up 22,000 miles of land.
probably one of the greatest defensive tacticians since Robert E. Lee.
Brilliant analogy. Without adequate supplies the Finns still ran a brilliant campaign. It's interesting given the history of border disputes and conquest that Finland would allow 20 years of military neglect. Military minds like Mannerheim are often checkmated by politics. IMHO.
