For Heroism Beyond the Call of duty



[Their] ship was a freighter [SS Santa Elisa] carrying drums of high-octane gasoline, one of two American ships in a small British convoy to Malta. Orders were to "get through at all costs." Heavily escorted, the convoy moved into the Mediterranean, and before noon of that day the enemy's attack began.

From then on the entire convoy was under constant attack from Axis planes and submarines. Assigned the command of an anti-aircraft gun mounted on the bridge, Larsen contributed to the successful defense of his ship for three days. At 4:00 AM on the morning of the fourth day, torpedo boats succeeded in breaking through and two attacked from opposite sides.

Sneaking in close under the cover of darkness, one opened point blank fire with four .50 caliber machine guns, sweeping the bridge. The other fired a torpedo into the opposite side of the freighter.

The explosion of the torpedo ignited the gasoline cargo and the American ship was in flames.

Reluctantly orders were given to abandon her. Two hours later, the survivors were picked up by a British destroyer, which then proceeded to take in tow a tanker that had been bombed and could not maneuver [SS Ohio].

After five hours of constant dive-bombing, the tanker was hit again -- her crew abandoned her -- and the destroyer was forced to cut her loose.

But the cargo she carried was most important to the defense of Malta, and it had to get through. The rescue destroyer and another destroyer steamed in -- lashed themselves on either side of the stricken tanker -- and dragged her along in a determined attempt to get her to port. The tanker's decks and superstructure had been almost completely wrecked by the incessant bombardment.

But Larsen's anxiety to get into the fight caused him to take inventory of her armament. He found an anti-aircraft gun mounted abaft the stack which needed only minor repairs to put it into action. The young cadet of his own ship, Francis A. Dales, a British Gunner's mate, and three of his men volunteered to help him. Though the ships were then constantly under attack; they boarded her, repaired the gun and manned it, with Larsen taking the trainer's position, and the gunner's mate and the cadet alternating as pointers. The shackled ships, inching along and making perfect targets, were assailed by concentrated enemy air power.

All that day wave after wave of German and Italian bombers dived at them and were beaten off by a heavy barrage. Bombs straddled them, scoring near misses, but no direct hits were made until noon the next day, when the tanker finally received a bomb down her stack which blew out the bottom of her engine room. Though she continued to settle until her decks were awash, they fought her through until dusk that day brought them under the protection of the hard fighting air force of Malta.

The magnificent courage of this young third officer and cadet-midshipman constitutes a degree of heroism which will be an enduring inspiration to seamen of the United States Merchant Marine everywhere.

Honour shared

Historians claim that one ship, the tanker SS Ohio with its cargo of 14,600 tons of fuel oil for ships, submarines and domestic use was responsible for saving Malta from having to surrender in August 1942. But surely the original HMS Ledbury in the first instance must share in this honour too.


HMS Ledbury

The Ohio was an American ship manned by a British crew and few the red ensign of the Merchant Navy. She was, quite unusually, armed with nine Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns, far more than a destroyer. She sailed on August 3 in convoy WS 21S, ostensibly bound for Suez via the Cape of Good Hope but instead joined with 13 other merchantmen Operation Pedestal bound for the relief of Malta.

On August 12, she was torpedoed on the port side aft of the bridge. This stopped her engines and wrecked her steering and compasses. The convoy steamed on and Ledbury stood by her. Eventually, she managed to get under way again, steering by emergency gear from the poop deck. By this time it was getting dark and Ledbury put a dim blue light on her stern and led the OHIO through the British minefield OHIO managed to work up to 16 knots and both ships caught up with the convoy.

Eighty miles from Malta they came under massive air attacks and Ohio's gunners shot down three Junkers 88s. Unfortunately, two landed on her, one on her fore deck and the other just forward of her bridge. A bomb hit her and she lost all power and her rudder. She was down by the bow and her top deck was down to sea level. HMS Ledbury lashed herself to one side HMS Pathfinder to her other and HMS Eskimo attached herself to the stern by a cable from her fo'c'sle. So, with two destroyers providing the propulsion and the third acting as her rudder, they arrived in Grand Harbour Malta on August 15.



Considering that they were under constant air attack it was a magnificent feat of seamanship.

HMS Ledbury was one of 49 Hunt class destroyers all named after famous hunts, such as Cowdray, Bleasdale, Talybont etc. She was built by Thornycrofts at Woolston Southampton in September 1941 and had a ship's company of 146.

During the passage to Malta of an important convoy Captain Mason's ship suffered most violent onslaught. She was a focus of attack throughout and was torpedoed early one night. Although gravely damaged, her engines were kept going and the Master made a magnificent passage by hand-steering and without a compass. The ship's gunners helped to bring down one of the attacking aircraft. The vessel was hit again before morning, but though she did not sink, her engine room was wreaked. She was then towed. The unwieldy condition of the vessel and persistent enemy attacks made progress slow, and it was uncertain whether she would remain afloat. All next day progress somehow continued and the ship reached Malta after a further night at sea.

The violence of the enemy could not deter the Master from his purpose. Throughout he showed skill and courage of the highest order and it was due to his determination that, in spite of the most persistent enemy opposition, the vessel, with her valuable cargo, eventually reached Malta and was safely berthed." (The award is dated 4th September 1942.)

Account of Deed: In August 1942, the Ohio, a 14,000 ton tanker belonging to the Texas Oil Company on loan to the British Ministry of War Transport and under the command of Captain Mason, was one of a fleet of 14 merchant vessels being sent to the aid of Malta. The convoy, with its naval and air escort, first met enemy action on 11th August and next day when the expected air attacks began, it became apparent that the Ohio was to be the main target of the enemy. For the next four days she suffered continuous attacks from enemy aircraft and submarines. She sustained grave damage from a torpedo, two sticks of bombs lifted her right out of the water and another exploded in her boiler room, a Stuka crashed and exploded on her deck, her back was broken and she was twice abandoned and twice reboarded. In spite of all this she finally reached Malta on 15th August and was literally carried into Valetta harbour, lashed between two destroyers and it was not until the last of her fuel had been pumped out that she finally sank. Captain Mason's award of the George Cross was not only for the master's personal indomitable courage and determination, but for every member of his crew.

Additional Information: May have served in the Great War. Was elected a member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners in November 1954. Other gallantry awards made to the crew of the SS Ohio during Operation Pedestal included a Distinguished Service Order, five Distinguished Service Crosses and seven Distinguished Service Medals.

The Ohio, the crippled survivor of 'Operation Pedestal' not long after her precious cargo had been removed was towed to another part of the harbour (Rinella Bay) and later had broken in half at her mooring. Attempts were made to join the halves but local facilities proved unable to do the job satisfactorily and the expense of towing the halves miles away to Gibraltar or Alexandra where too great to justify. She was used as a makeshift store and later fitted out to house Yugoslav troops.



Then on September 19th 1946 her future was decided, the two rusted streaked halves were towed to deep water ten miles from Malta to where the executioner, a destroyer was waiting , After the first shots the rear portion weakened by the Germans bombs soon disappeared from sight, the buoyant forepart refused to sink armour piercing shells blasted the bridgework and the shored up amid ship section where she had been struck by a German torpedo slowly she sank beneath the waves, the bows pointing skyward in a final farewell. Then she was gone.

I laid my beloved husband of 21 years to rest yesterday. He died Friday evening of a massive heart attack. We had a military funeral for him.

His last act of serving his country was casting his vote for GW a week ago Saturday.

Jesus promised Peter something every repentant believer craves—another chance (Luke 22:31-34). After telling him Satan would sift him as wheat, Jesus reassured Peter that He had prayed that his faith would not fail. Although Peter had insisted he would never forsake Him, Jesus said he would deny Him three times before dawn. In expectation of Peter's restoration, Jesus recommissioned him for future ministry: "When you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren" (v.32).

Preacher George Duncan said, "I don't think many church-vacancy committees would have considered Peter a suitable candidate for a church!" Duncan pointed out that at Pentecost, however, God chose Peter to deliver the most vital sermon in church history. "It would seem," Duncan said, "that some Christians have a message of forgiveness for the unbeliever, but no message of forgiveness for the believer. I'm glad that God does!" Because of that forgiveness, a new day of service dawned for Peter.

Indeed, if you are a repentant believer like Peter, you too can trust the Lord to give you another chance. Confess your sin and experience His forgiveness, healing, and restoration (1 John 1:9). —Joanie Yoder

I once remember reading an account of a British freighter that was damaged on the Malta run which lost all power. The convoy left her behind, but a day or two later she "sailed" into Malta on her on and I do mean sailed.

The crew rigged sails on the ships craines and litterally sailed her to Malta. I wish I could find that again.

0753 Death of St. Pirminius, first abbot of the Benedictine monastery at Reichenau (located in modern Germany). His name endures today as author of a book entitled "Scarapsus," which is the earliest known writing to contain the Apostles' Creed as it is worded in its present form.
1631 English clergyman John Eliot, 27, first arrived in America, at Boston. He afterward became the first Protestant minister to devote himself to evangelization of the American Indian.
1784 English clergyman Thomas Coke, 37, first arrived in America, at New York City. He was the first Methodist bishop to come to the New World.
1818 Pliny Fisk, 26, set sail for Palestine. Ordained by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, Fisk became the first American missionary to journey to the Near East.
1925 The Pentecostal Ministerial Alliance was organized at St. Louis, MO. It became the forerunner of a new denomination, established in 1932 as the Pentecostal Church, Inc.
