I was in a Reforger unit that participated in a huge command post exercise to war game a Sov conventional attack in Europe. It worked out pretty much like the ground war description in Clancy's Red Storm Rising. We took serious losses, but attrited the Warsaw Pact so badly that their offensive ran out of steam about half way across West Germany. I always wondered if Clancy was privy to the results of that.

Clancy's Red Storm Rising

One of his best books. Had a computer game and a board game based on Reforger. As NATO I was always able to stop the Soviet advance on the Rhine but the Fulda Gap forces usually were overrun quickly.
