The "tires" are very tread-like, except for not running over rollers, etc.
Jim took this excellent picture of Dave maneuvering the Rover at the start of the EVA-2 traverse. The Solar Wind Collector is visible beyond the Rover TV camera. At the front of the Rover, we can see the closed battery covers. In front of Jim's seat, we can see his footrests. Note that there is dust coming off the wheels as Dave maneuvers. This picture also gives us a good view of Dave's RCU-mounted Hasselblad camera and of the wire Rover wheels. The traverse maps are mounted on Jim's handhold and the Buddy Secondary Life Support System (BSLSS) bag is hanging from the back of Jim's seat.
