BOTH the USA & CSA had women officers.MOST were physicians, though at least one female was commissioned as a CPT of cavalry by the PACSA. (also some of the Partisan Ranger Companies had female officers! read this to be spies & guerrillas.)
the PACSA had a FEW serving enlisted females, who were identified as female= mostly nurses & cooks.
otoh, there were MANY young southern belles, who passed thenselves off as young boys & served in the ranks. some from beginning to the bloody. bitter end.
Mary Elizabeth Kirkeguard Hamilton, of West Baton Rouge Parish,LA, served under her deceased brother's name from APR 61 to May 65, was wounded at least 4 times & ended up marrying her doctor (the doctor discovered her gender, while treating her for a severe belly wound in '65!) & had 14 children over the next 16 years.
to my knowledge, she is the ONLY CSA veteran who was ALSO a debutante!
during WW1, the USN had "Yeomanettes" as telephone operators & morse operators. the other military services had no women, except some few nurses & ambulance drivers until WW2.
