I have affection for the Garand. The weapon "hangs" well, with just the right balance in the left hand during standing position shooting. This makes the weapon "point", at least for me.

The MG-42, especially in the high cyclic rate WW2 versions with 1,500 to as much as 2,000 rounds per minute, is without peer. Nothing else as good has been made since. Not built for hosing, take a delicate trigger finger.

Cartridge is not perfect, though. Naturally I have strong opinions about cartridges, don't I about everything? Something with a 125 grain Voss type bullet as used in the early CETME and .270 velocity, and a modern short steel case, a little fatter than a .308 with about the same case capacity. About 7 mm.
