No doubt the U.S. defense industry has helped keep our armed forces on top.

One of the interesting fights in the radar effort was some of the bigger contractors, like Bell Labs, argued in favor of farming out the research to industry. Loomis thought that only a crash effort by the best scientists across the board could deliver the goods in time. So, the Rad Lab developed the technology and then they contracted out production to the defense contractors.
