On my father's side, my ancestors fought for the Union. They fought in Tennessee...

But, the valor of these men are something to behold! I think of Chamberlain, of Lee, of Hancock, of Garnett, of Armistead, and especially of Stonewall Jackson... it makes me proud to be an American.

On my mother's side were North Carolina abolitionists who fought for the Union in a mounted infantry regiment. I think they spent most of their time in Tennessee also.

The bravery shown by the Civil War soldiers was amazing. The munitions used made the battlefield so lethal, yet they didn't hesitate to expose themselves to fire and fight with determination.

It does indeed make one proud to be an American. I think one of the reasons most Americans find the Civil War so fascinating is that was the furnace that forged the modern American nation and character.
