Obama at first holds firm, then makes a slight concession
Governor-elect Nikki Haley of South Carolina was one of a number of incoming governors to meet with Obama in D.C. over the weekend at the Blair House. Haley challenged Obama over his health care legislation.
From the Charleston Post & Courrier "Obama opens door for S.C. opt-out, Haley says" Dec. 3:
COLUMBIA -- Republican Gov.-elect Nikki Haley said President Barack Obama agreed Thursday to consider letting South Carolina opt out of the federal health care overhaul if the state comes up with its own solutions to meet some of the important conditions of the national legislation.
Haley said she told Obama that South Carolina could not afford the health care mandate, and that it would cripple small businesses.
"I respectfully asked him to consider repealing the bill," she said, to which he clearly stated he would not. "I pushed him further and said if that's the case, because of states' rights, would you at least consider South Carolina opting out of the program?"
Obama told her he would consider letting South Carolina opt out, she said, if the state could find its own solution that included a state exchange, preventing companies from bumping people for pre-existing conditions and allowing insurance pooling.
She went on to say that she felt that his response was "genuine."
The Governor-elect is now vowing to "crunch numbers" and come up with a solution that would meet Obama's demands, and allow for SC to get out of ObamaCare.

Awesome, she’s going to take some of the fire meant for Palin. This is what we need, not the gutless men of the GOP.
Someone in leadership needs to. The spineless wonders in the GOP never cease to amaze me with the way they will cave or compromise.
I had high hopes for Nicky Haley, but this quote sounds like "I looked into his eyes and saw his soul"...
2 more years, 2 more years come on 2012. Let’s get this ass clown out of office.
WTH? Would he consider...? He would allow an opt out if...?
IOW, BO/BS still calls the shots? What am I missing...other than more coffee? This smells like playing nicey compromise to me.
That is the first and last time she will make that mistake
I guess I'm way to nice, if I was governor-elect, I'd tell Obama to go pound sand. Sue me to force my state to participate

The only way Obama’s conditions aren’t the death of the free healthcare market is if companies are also allowed to offer less expensive insurance that doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions and people are allowed to not opt in on anything. Obama wouldn’t permit either.
Ping!
Good for her. Now that South Carolina is out of Obama Care, does the parents of the 26 and lower children, remove their brat off their health care immediately? Everyone who has a pre-condition are taken off Obama Care to find their own insurance? When does this get implemented? She is going to be a great governor. Enough welfare for South Carolina. If I was her, I would take all medical welfare out of the state and let people deal with civilian insurance. She could be the first state that has NO GOVERNMENT health care which would be fantastic. If you are going to have a baby, then have the insurance to pay for it. No more going to the emergency room for free. Either have insurance or don’t be looked at. I truly hope she goes with that. I think that people who go to the hospital need to have a credit card (for those who opt out of health care) and it needs to be pre-approved before the doctor says “open wide”. Does anyone know how wonderful that would be?????? That is one way for our debt to fall some.
Well, that statement says it all. Barf.
Ya gotta give her major points for asking and getting the door opened—even before she’s sworn into office. Where have the other 50 governors been?
Oh, and yes, it is disgusting that Obama has managed to make himself the national healthcare king, giving special exemptions to unions and companies and now maybe states he deems to so favor.
The site 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas was proposed to house more than 4,000 metric tons of high-level nuclear waste from South Carolina's Savannah River Site. The state and Washington have sued over Obama's attempt to kill plans for the storage site after decades of study.
"SRS has done a good job, but that was a temporary solution. It was never meant to be a permanent solution," Haley said she told him. "The federal government has reneged on its promise, and the people of South Carolina want their money back."
South Carolina's power plants and its customers have contributed more than $1 billion over nearly 30 years to a permanent repository.
The lady does have some moxie after all.
She also challenged him on nuclear energy...

“Cut her some slack. She isn’t even officially in office yet. It sounds to me like she got something out of Obama most governors haven’t even had the guts to bring up”
Exactly, but some people are never happy. The first time she ever talks to the guy in her life she informs him that she is against his crowning achievement. I’d say that’s pretty good. I haven’t read any stories about a single other Governor saying this to him. I mean, she can’t be like most of us here who would do a lot worse if we even met him.
What, is South Carolina now going to do its own Romney-Care?
Get government out of the healthcare business. The first great mistake was creating Medicare, the second was creating Obamacare. Let's not compound the folly by creating Romney-Care in every state.
I wasn't being critical of her, just noting that the old adage "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me "
She took Obama at his word, which is the same thing as taking a conman at his word
