WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, aided by an extraordinary outpouring of Internet support Monday, hauled in more than $3.5 million in 20 hours.
Paul, the Texas congressman with a Libertarian tilt and an out-of-Iraq pitch, entered heady fundraising territory with a surge of Web-based giving tied to the commemoration of Guy Fawkes Day.
Fawkes was a British mercenary who failed in his attempt to kill King James I on Nov. 5, 1605. He also was the model for the protagonist in the movie "V for Vendetta." Paul backers motivated donors on the Internet with mashed-up clips of the film on the online video site YouTube as well as the Guy Fawkes Day refrain: "Remember, remember the 5th of November."
Paul's total deposed Mitt Romney as the single-day fundraising record holder in the Republican presidential field. When it comes to sums amassed in one day, Paul now ranks only behind Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton, who raised nearly $6.2 million on June 30, and Barack Obama.
Paul spokesman Jesse Benton said the effort began independently about two months ago at the hands of Paul's backers. He said Paul picked up on the movement, mentioning in it speeches and interviews.
"It's been kind of building up virally," Benton said.
The $3.5 million, he said, represented online contributions from more than 22,000 donors.
Paul has been lagging in the polls behind Republican front-runners. But he captured national attention at the end of September when he reported raising $5.2 million in three months, putting him fourth among Republican presidential candidates in fundraising for the quarter.
Paul as of Monday had raised $6.3 million since Oct. 1, more than half his goal of $12 million by the end of the year, according to his Web site.
Paul advocates limited government and low taxes like other Republicans, but he stands alone as the only GOP presidential candidate opposed to the Iraq war. He also has opposed Bush administration security measures that he says encroach on civil liberties.
“And when Ron Paul dares to point that out,”
I have heard him point out that we somehow deserved 911.
It’s hard to take someone seriously that says things like that.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Dr. Keyes appoint Ron Paul as the dog-catcher czar.
Paul's supporters are your next-door neighbors, the small business owner, Mom and Dad driving the kids to high school football games.
We agree on something.
And entirely irrelevant to this discussion.
As a matter of fact, based on the fact that Ron Paul's donations consisted primarily of individual donations of $200 or less, it's fair to say that two records were set today:
I bet you've been watching "The Matrix." George Soros multiplies himself into 22,000 copies of "Agent Smith" -- all with different names -- and then makes donations.
Yeah -- that's the ticket!!
That’s a lot of Chinese restaurant dishwashers!
I hope he doesn't. But if Rudy is the nominee then I will encourage Paul to run as a 3rd party candidate.
Anti-war groups and leftists have no incentive to support Paul. Paul doesn't support the military as humanitarian missionaries aspect of the anti-war kooks, and he doesn't buy into the envirowackoism.
I've seen pics and video clips of Paul's supporters and they're no different than the conservatives who attended the Bush re-election rallies in 2004. If any of these left-wing groups were supporting Paul, you'd have heard it by now and it would have driven away the real supporters. But you can believe otherwise, and amuse yourself in your own delusional world as Paul's campaign continues to exponentially grow in size and power.
Rudy Giuliani 32%
Fred Thompson 20%
John McCain 16%
Mitt Romney 9%
Mike Huckabee 7%
Ron Paul 2%
Tom Tancredo 1%
Duncan Hunter 1%
Sam Brownback 1%
Unsure 11%
Other 1%
RP’s really burning up the polls.
I noticed he wasn’t scoring high enough to even be included in RCP and Rassmussen’s polls.
Republican support for withdrawal from Iraq has steadied and perhaps even grown here in Iowa, to a whopping 54% in October. ("Majority of Iowa Republican Caucus Goers Favor Iraq Withdrawal Within 6 Months")
Obviously, Iowa's penchant for Old Right conservative non-interventionism creates a HUGE potential opening for Ron Paul. I suspect the main question they've had is, "Is he Electable?"
Well, if 54% of Iowa Republicans already favor getting out of Iraq... I'd say that raising $4 million dollars in a day could buy Ron Paul a LOT of "Electability".
Hello, early Iowa caucuses. Good-bye, neo-con foreign adventurism?
Most of the polls purposefully exclude Dr. Paul’s name and are conducted on land-lines to the same small percentage of registered Republicans who voted in 2004. Sine the bulk of Paul’s support is from newcomers and independents, who own cell phones, they’re obviously aren’t going to get polled.
I myself gave. Rather run this country the way it should be run than by a bunch of corporate asskissers.
And Ron would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn’t for those meddling kids LOL ;-).
Well, the good news is that we're now polling at 7.4% in New Hampshire -- solidly in 4th, and beating Fred Thompson.
So, it does look like we're starting to get Polled.
(smiles sweetly)
Not surrendering; just giving Iraq fair notice that they're a sovereign nation now and we've completed most of our objectives.
The delusion comes from the extreme extremists who conjure up in their minds a Ron Paul nomination from a reputable party. Enjoy your self-inflicted delusions.
If this is delusions, then I'll roll up another fatty, because this is some good s--t!
Centers for Disease Control even acknowledged that land-line polls are hard to conduct to get their health stats.
The polls are a complete joke and have been unmasked. Your screenname should be Doritos.
