Our city council just banned smoking in bars (no restaurants attached) in my small town. The bar owners are up in arms over it. One suggestion was, that the bar go "private". Don't know if they'll allow that though.

As a private tobacco appreciation club, I would say they could win on appeal any attempt to out law them.

Uh, aren't they already private? I mean, doesn't some private individual(s) own the bars, and not the government.

I don't smoke, but I am totally against these laws, for this reason alone.

Consider yourself lucky. My town eliminated smoking within the city limits. Second hand smoke from those smokers standing outside the building could cause death donchaknow. Polution from vehicles is a lot more dangerous to my health but I don't think banning cars within the city limits is going to happen soon. Boozed up drivers can be very dangerous also but I don't think the Nazis that came up with this idea will shut down there local watering holes. Afterall, those afteroon martinis are a must. I don't smoke but the action by these brown shirts really upsets me.
