Please read at least one book before you post an opinion!

Isn't it amazing that the "Harry Potter is eeeevil" crowd never read any of the books?

No. It was/is the same way with the "D&D is evil/satanic" crowd. Most, in this group, refuse to do their own research prefering to dislike what others tell them to.

So, aren't you saying that "the Bible Alone" always ends up being "the Bible plus someone's tradition"? If that's the case, then don't you have to choose between two possibilities ... either Christianity itself is a fraud, or the real question you should ask is not, "who do I think is following the Bible" but "who has preserved the authentic Christian tradition from Apostolic times"?

That is not what I am saying. I know by scripture that there will be MANY false teachers... I believe it is accurate to say, that EVERY author of the New Testament gives a warning about being deceived by false teachers/doctrines. Some make an association with the false prophets in the OT... teaching their own imaginations, when God had not sent them. And because if this, it says to put all to the test. Peter even went into such detail as to describe false teachers as distorting scripture, and gave a warning to not be deceived by them. Having read this in scripture, I actually started testing what I was taught against the scripture, and low and behold... by observation I can conlude there are MANY false teachers. So I believe the Word of God is NOT a fraud, but that MANY professors of God are. I am confident that there are MANY false teachers, because God said there would be, even if I'm wrong about who they are.

But just as the Levitical Law gave rules on testing the prophets, Jesus and others in the NT gave some pointers on testing for false teachers. He gave some characteristics of "hypocrits". It is my experience that FEW people actually DO what he suggests.

When I have done so with many Doctrines (many Catholic doctrines), I have had to conclude that many were NOT based on scripture. Sometimes I could not come to a conclusion. Othertimes, it was not hard to see how they distort scripture to make the claim that their traditions are supported by scripture.

Maybe they're afraid the books will overcome their free will and send them to the dark side.

Catholics don't do anything remotely like that, ridiculous claims in Jack Chick tracts notwithstanding.

I was not suggesting that they did, I was trying to find common ground that we could both agree on. And I assure you, Jack Chick was not and is not influential in my views of Catholisism.

Maybe God doesn't approach this thing the way you do.

...I'm sure he doesn't... Somehow I think He's a lot smarter than me.

Having read all of them, I have this strange compulsion to hear demonic commands by playing records backwards. However, I can't get my CD player to spin backwards. Any technical tips on that (and I wonder if digitizing them really improves the backwards masked demonic messages)?

Will you please point out where I posted an opinion? I posted a question, but no opinions. It's not possible to have an opinion if I haven't read them.

It's that whole protestant "priesthood of the self" bidness...

Reminds me back in college when a boy claimed that everything written in the Bible was to be taken verbatim as written, but that drinking and dancing were not allowable. Yep, he pulled the ol' Jesus turned water into grape juice at Cana line, and then said that David's dancing and leaping before the Lord was "spiritual leaping". They can't have it both ways. (And let's not even get into errors or misunderstandings in translation--anyone who translates from one language to another realizes that he is also INTERPRETING the words). /rant

That's IT!!!

McCartney is the Beast. Like Damien in "The Omen I, II and III", he kills off various people after his death and apparent resurrection. It'll be Ringo next, you wait and see.

OK, sorry, calm down! I meant it as a general comment to the whole thread, thus I replied to the top post. I didn't mean to indict you!

I think it's amazing that I never said they were evil (because I haven't read them) and I was accused of doing so. Methinks some people here are a tad defensive.

Apology (if that's what that was) accepted. And by the way, I am very calm.

When I have done so with many Doctrines (many Catholic doctrines), I have had to conclude that many were NOT based on scripture.

What makes you think that every doctrine should be "based on scripture"? Paul says to hold fast to all of the traditions he taught, even those he taught by word of mouth. The Church existed for decades before the New Testament was written; what were doctrines "based on" at that time?

That's distinct, by the way, from asserting that every doctrine should be consistent with Scripture. Something can be consistent with Scripture without being obviously "based on" Scripture.
