August is the month of devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary:"Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.” ”
(Luke 2:34-35)

Could a FR scholar explain how Herod's marriage to his brother's wife was unlawful?
I thought Mosaic law required a brother to take marry his brother's wife, if the brother died, at least in some circumstances.
I'd appreciate a clarification.

Could a FR scholar explain how Herod's marriage to his brother's wife was unlawful? It was unlawful in a couple of ways. First, Herod Phillip, Herod Antipa's brother (half-brother, really) was not dead. Herod had simply seduced Herodias away from him--willingly, since Herodias knew Phillip had been cheating on her with other women. Also, Herodias was also Herod's niece, which fell inside the forbidden Jewish lines of marriage, or consanguinity. Herodias knew all this, which was why she hated John the Baptist all the more for publicly condemning Herod about it.
The Jewish historian Josephus documents it pretty well here.
Hope that helps.
