Latin was good for centuries. A person could easily learn what it meant with missals in Latin and English.
Along with the Latin, there was a feeling of the transcendental, that one belonged to a centuries-long tradition.
Today. along with the Latin, you get a sneer from the pope, and a visit from the FBI.
