Some take pastors and churches like these as an example of the great falling away predicted in Scripture as a forerunner of the end times. Maybe. But remember that at the time the mainline Protestant denominations were overtaken by modernism and neo-orthodoxy (basically a milder form of modernism), they were a dominant institution in Amrrican society. No longer. In any large city, many people in the general public know who their Catholic bishop or archbishop is but far fewer know who is the Episcopal bishop. The mainline Episcopalian Church has sunk to under one million members. Ditto for the mainline Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, United Methodist denominations. Barring the Second Coming, the ministries of Rick Warren, Andy Stanley, et. al., will be gone upon their passing, and their churches but a memory.
