Were you aware that Rembrandt’s painting is a self-portrait, with his wife as the harlot? I wonder about its worth.

Was not aware of that. Value is probably more than your and my net worth together by a large amount and I don’t even know you.

Love that last one by Giordano: Harlots don’t make for loyal friends in times of need. (Nor do their crack-smoking clients after fathering the child...).
“Prodigal”, btw, doesn’t imply sexual immorality, but certainly makes the point in the paintings.

I love the Lute. It is making a comeback in some circles. It is one of the earliest “Fretted” Instruments.
(Sting has done a lot with it.)

There are two more paintings with Lutes in them.
My theory grows stronger every minute. :-)

Yes, Stom is another good one. A pity about Caravaggio - driven mad probably bc of the lead in paint?
He was mightily influential despite it all!

Did you notice the possible lute in #26? The angry wench has turned it to an offensive tool!

I see a lute in 10, 13, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 26.
I’ve decided that, being a creative, self-relient person, I will not be overcome by the Luters. (see Atlas Shrugged) :-)

Since none of the artwork today has period appropriate dress, I choose the non-period appropriate dress painting #4. Plus, as earlier posters stated, the prodigal son is not trapped in time. Fortunately, the Father is forgiving and desires that we come home to Him.
#4 is very bold and uncluttered. Good use of color, composition and form.

the prodigal son is not trapped in timeTissot made that point with his Prodigal in Modern Life series, of which #8 is his first.

Your insightful comment about the pecuniary value of these paintings started me thinking.
I don’t gamble, because I don’t believe that “luck” or “chance” exist: if God wants to send money to me, He knows where to find me.
Sometimes, though, I speculate Walter Mittyishly what I would do if He caused someone to give me a winning lottery ticket. To whom would I donate the winnings? He would need to guide me in doing that.
And then, thanks to you, I realized that He has me doling out millions of dollars’ worth in paintings every day.
