The Bible encourages us to meditate on it (Ps. 1:1-3, 119:11-16, etc.); these artists have done so, and their works can assist us and enrich our own thoughts about biblical characters, incidents and concepts, and increase our faith in He who is behind it all. As you encounter and consider these images and the related Scriptures and the Spirit enlightens your understanding, please share it with us!
But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is being filmed right now. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year's viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! Here is the Official Trailer.
Here is a link for free viewing of The Chosen: "Works with your phone, tablet, and you can cast to your Roku or Chromecast." Last fall I paid $34.98 for DVDs and ongoing internet access—best 35 bucks I've ever spent (I don't recall how much our marriage license cost, but then it was 43 years ago).
One of the first instances of defenestration as a form of execution.
And perhaps one of the first drive-by shootings on record.
Sounds like you’ve been talked to by Jack Webb and are giving us “just the facts, ma’am, just the facts.”
I used to love that show! LOL.
Thanks for your continued postings!
Actually, my Pastor preached on this VERY SAME passage of Scripture last Wednesday.
He brought in some very interesting thoughts on the whole event, regarding the anointing of God.
I have only started attending this church recently (I started on the day FR changed servers and I couldn’t post my thread! LOL), but I am very impressed with the Pastor’s deep sensitivity and approach to Scripture.
(((PS...they already have me playing the piano!)))
You are most welcome—it is a joy for me to do.
The AoG Churrrrrrch of the Open Windows?
The windows have now been closed and adorned with Christmas Candles.
But we will be having an outdoor Christmas Eve Service, with a nice fire-pit going full blast.
We New England Pentecostals are made of sterner stuff. Brrrrrrrr.
They took a female mannikin and dressed it up like... well, like Jezebel, and smeared peanut butter all over it.
Threw it down off the wall, and waiting for it were some dogs they had recruited for that scene, who hadn't quite had their dinner yet.
Must have been hilarious.
Great Special Effects!
Fitting death for a wicked woman! Her eunuchs were not too loyal to her in the end! Great pictures to illustrate this event. Thank you.
I admit freely that I enjoyed reporting on this blessed event—kind of had a smile on my face the entire time.
The famous Jewish Bible commentator Rashi identifies the disciple summoned to anoint Jehu as Jonah son of Amittai (of Jonah and the fish fame).
Had not heard that—thanks. Was it you recently who reported that he was thought to be the Shunamite’s revived son?
Scanned through on my way back from Cleveland. #12 was my favorite. Very dramatic story. I remember reading it for the first time when I was 13. Jehu impressed me as formidable. 1. Run away as soon as you anoint him. 2. He drives like a maniac. 3. He kills everyone he meets. 4. He rides his horse and chariot over the queen. Did the queen die from the fall, or horses, or chariot, or dogs?
That was Elijah and the widow of Zarephath. Her son is said in Midrash to be Jonah son of Amittai.
I haven’t even covered his “special offering” to Baal yet.l
