Hard to spin “Thou shall not lie with a man as with a woman” in any convincing way, unless you just want to be convinced. Wonder if God smacked him upside the head with the reality stick.

Perhaps Francis stayed very ignorant over the decades and is a slow learner who means well but has to take a lot of time to grasp something well enough to be able to do the right thing...no run-on sentences when talking to him....

I have no doubt what Scripture means about "lying with a man as with a woman," but the euphemism lends itself to misinterpretation, as in "I don't lie 'as with a woman,' because I don't do uvw and xyz with women, only with men. So I'm OK." Bogus, I know, but people say that.

Also "...and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly..."

Some gay men say, "well I never *did* have any relations with women and so I never *left* the natural use of women. I've only had relations with men. Therefore this scripture does not apply to me."

People can always eventually justify their own vices if you don't get flat-out specific about what they're not supposed to do.
