That’s what happens when you recognize extra-Biblical sources as authority on par with Scripture.

Some time there’s going to be a conflict and you’re stuck between believing the church which will damn you if you don’t it, or believing God who can damn you if you don’t believe Him

Swedenborg published about 35 Latin volumes which collectively we call the Writings. Some view them as Bible commentary, others view them and treat them as the Third Testament. I'm in the latter group.

A few other things: Swedenborg witnessed the Last Judgement in the spiritual world during 1757. On June 19, 1771, when his last work was completed (True Christianity), began the process of the Second Advent; establishing the Lord's New Church on earth.

The Writings are also known as the Heavenly Doctrines. One major component is the internal or spiritual sense of Sacred Scripture as it is understood in the spiritual world. Explained are almost all mysteries of faith as well as Doctrine laid out and explained.

As for 'spirit of truth', Swedenborg wrote what was revealed to him by the Lord. His spiritual eyes were opened and he was in both the natural and spiritual world simultaneously similar to the prophets or John when he wrote Revelation. We believe that only the Lord can reveal the internal meaning through others.

Thanks much for your reply.

If I understand you, you’re not saying Swedenborg is the paraclete or Holy Spirit but more a prophet writing under the spirit.

You didn’t answer whether sola scriptura was a doctrine. I was thinking of whether this religion inherited this from the Reformation. From your reply, I’m sorta getting that it is not really in the tradition of the Reformers, more in line with the other prophet-based offshoots.

Please correct me if I’m wrong here, and thanks again.

So well said! Those who would claim the name of Christ must examine their own beliefs by Scripture, not the other way around!! Scripture is infallible. Man-made dogma and doctrines are not.

Thanks.

The charge of YOPIOS falls flat because virtually all error is a result of NOT looking to Scripture for final authority.

You are so right! Scripture confirms Scripture, but then the term “YOPIOS” and “Sola Yourselfa” and other such nonsense highlight the sad fact that those who believe non-Catholics practice and adhere to such concepts show that they don’t understand the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer.

Nor do they understand Sola Scriptura.

The ironic thing about the Catholics criticism of YOPIOS, is that somewhere along the line, some one of them personally interpreted Scripture, and then got a bunch of his buddies together and they voted on and it became interpretation by consensus.

Hardly any guarantee of an accurate translation or interpretation.

After all, wide is the road......

Might (or consensus) does not make right.

I suspect the thirst for power had much to do with some of that interpretation.

And you are right re: Sola Scriptura
