Could be . . . but it's never been officially abrogated and it doesn't look like there's much wiggle room. In the somewhat changed climate today, I think you could make a good case that it's time to follow the rules.

As a practical matter, recorded music KILLS any attempt at music-making by all but the most professional. The session musicians at the studio are better than anybody you're likely to have around. So it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

And, of course, recorded music destroys the cooperative function of joint worship, which is the kind of argument that the "we are church" crowd should be more receptive to. Just sayin' . . .
