I liked Willis in that but never was overly fond of Cybill Shepherd. Don’t know why.

Maybe he took the sacrament of Marriage so seriously that he had to resolve some issues with her— or maybe he was unsure about her in some way. Maybe he was hoping she’d convert. There are a lot of reasons he might have been waiting. Maybe he wasn’t sure he could love her as much as his first wife.

From another perspective: why compound the mistake of having an out-of-wedlock child by asking God to bless the union with a mother you are not 100% about? In marriage, we are making a vow with God as the third partner in the union. Maybe he had doubts and was unwilling to take that step until he watched her be a mother for a while.

Maybe he was putting his love of his faith before his love for the woman in this case. Luckily, we don’t have to judge him— God does that!
