Actually, the new series, while less an allegory of the trek to Zion, seems (IMHO) to display even more doctrine (preexistence, cycle of planets, etc.) than the original did. I’m waiting to see if Zoe on Caprica has virtual (spirit) children who need physical (cylon) bodies.

And yes, encourage me! reaganaut makes me watch Big Love, and is threatening to make me watch the Twilight series next!

You thought you had to have faith in Joseph Smith? You didn’t pay very close attention in church then. Perhaps you should discuss this with your home teachers.

You aren’t the first person to be misled away.

Actually he probably did pay close attention. I was taught that as well, ironically BY my home teachers and there are plenty of LDS leadership quotes to back that up. I will let elsie post the quotes...

A testimony of Joseph Smith is required for Mormonism, that means faith in him.

Right...

Sit at the poker table, receive your cards, declare a royal flush, stick your cards in your pocket and walk away before being called...

It works, unless of course you try and grab the pot as you leave...

I do appreciate your playing though. Another demonstration of the empty hand of Mormonism is always helpful...

So how does that work exactly, not having to have faith in Smith. If he is a liar then the whole of Mormonism falls like a shoddy house of cards...

(oh wait...)

...what is being done here daily, attacking Mormonism, shouldn’t be where you get all of your info.

Exactly right! You should go out now and rent the original Battlestar Galactica series. And the new Battlestar Galactica series. And the movies. And pre-order Caprica from Amazon. And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith, the truth of it will be manifested unto you.

How? Have a friend take pictures of you; if your eyes seem to glow with a red cylon light, you know it's true! If your portrait doesn't come out with red eyes, just keep taking pictures until it does.

Could be, I try not to let the LDS tie in mar the store line.

As far as encouragement, no problem...

Better outer darkness than Twilight...

Because there are too many people here twisting and misrepresenting. Unlike some of them it would seem, I can’t spend all day long here correcting them.

- - - - - - - -
SHOW ME ONE THING THAT I MISREPRESENTED, if it is prevalent as you say it shouldn’t be a problem.

But the real reason Mormons don’t defend their faith is because THEY CANNOT, it is not defensible.

If you have “faith” that JS was a prophet, then all that he and subsequent prophets claim will be perceived and interpreted as true. His testimony and the first vision account(s) are based upon JS’s truthfulness. The entire religion is based upon this.

If you don’t have “faith” in JS, then the opposite is true.

Mormons believe (have faith) that JS was a prophet, ergo, their faith is built upon JS.

Once I learned that JS did not meet the biblical criteria for a prophet and most especially, when I learned that men can become gods, my faith in mormonism crumbled.

How can one continue to believe in tenets of a faith, if the founder of the faith was not credible?

And as far as home teachers are concerned, they only read the latest article in the Ensign designated for home teaching (The 1st Presidency message) and then offer some commentary on how it applies to them. That’s all they’ve ever done.

I have faith in Jesus Christ and the Holy Bible. The only things I should have faith in.

Hi, SZ. We meet on another thread :)

If God did not call Joseph Smith to be a prophet then the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has nothing.

You and I have come to different conclusions about Joseph Smith. My conviction in his prophetic calling has come through study, prayer and personal experience — something that I am not able to adequately describe, but which nevertheless is very real to me.

I’m sure you have heard many LDS members bear testimony of their own inner convictions in a similar way.

We can’t prove our claims. We invite people to study, ponder and pray. God can and does answer our prayers and reveal truth if we seek Him with all our hearts.

Best regards,

Normandy

Hi Norm,

How’re things?

You’re correct, faith is believing in that which cannot be proven. I don’t mean this to sound contrarian, but JS’s character goes right to the heart of the matter so to speak.

His actions after the first vision and after his claim to be a prophet are what make his claims about the first vision suspect and are not indicative of how a prophet would behave. There are too many proven contradictions there.

FRegards,
SZ

There are definitely LDS claims that can be disproved. Will you look at these?

Prayerfully consider post 87. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.
