The trouble with Callister stretch to connect the idea of “orbs” with Joseph Smith’s Urim and Thummim is that orbs are by definition round, and usually spherical. I’ve never seen or heard of any report that described Smith’s Urim and Thummim as round or spherical. As the article says, they’ve always been described as triangular. And the Biblical Urim and Thummim are not described in terms of their shape, but the description of their use suggests they were used in casting lots (at least some of the time), and thus very unlikely to have been spherical.
One could make a better academic argument for drawing an analogy between Joseph Smith’s Urim and Thummim and the European portraiture tradition of showing the subject holding a pair of spectacles in one hand, to suggest knowledge and literacy, than “orbs”. The Liahona could reasonably be interpreted an evocative of the “orb” tradition, but not the Urim and Thummim.

The only orbs I have seen are the ghostie ones on the paranormal shows. Does that count?

This brings to mind the phrase, "Either the Mormons must be right, or the Catholics must be right." The
orbis mundi, a globe often surmounted by a cross, in the hand of Christ was a widely used symbol in the Counter-Reformation. In fact, it was specifically avoided in Elizabethan England, and proof of Papist sympathies, as it implied the worldly authority of the Pope as Christs' vicar.
This guy is worried about sounding like Dan Brown? No problem - Dan Brown at least had some idea of what he was talking about.
