Yes, personally I prefer the hymn sung in a cappella. It is fairly easy to sing.

Hands down it would be “Amazing Grace”

Contemporary would be “Blessed Be Your Name” by Matt Redman.

BTW nice thread, thanks for starting it.

I love to sing The Lord’s Prayer, Ave Maria, Panis Angelicus and other old sacred songs. There are too many worship songs I like.

I have an autographed photo of Norman on my desk wishing me a happy birthday. What a sweetheart! He phoned my husband at work and talked to him for over thirty minutes. A very unpretentious and nice man.

One gospel song that I have been listening to a lot is “The Love of God,” which was written by Frederick Lehman of Pasadena, Calif. at a time when war, pestilence, economic chaos, and Bolshevism threatened Western civilization. The words are about as relevant today as they were in 1919, when the song first appeared:

“When years of time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men, who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.”

The Battle Hymn of the Republic
It's a shame that some school teacher made her students sing this on video for youtube clips with substitutions to the lyrics to praise Barack Hussein Obama Mmm Mmm Mmmmm.

Here's a highly politically incorrect version from "Folk Songs for Conservatives," a sound disc that appeared in 1963:

Hang Earl Warren from a sour apple tree!
His impeachment still won't fill the bill for folks like you and me.
We'll soon cast off the yoke of his judicial tyranny
As we go charging on.

Off we charge in all directions,
Wiretaps and Red detections,
Inciting Cuban insurrections,
But first, let's lynch our man!

Noel Parmentel, 1963

I sang this with a choir at a Dallas area church I was visiting. It has been one of my all time favorites ever since. The song is Bow the Knee written by Tom Fettke. The chorus is:

Bow the knee.

Trust the heart of your Father,

When the answer goes beyond what you can see.

Bow the knee.

Lift your eyes towards heaven and believe the one who holds eternity.

And when you don't understand

The purpose of his plan.

In the presence of the King,

Bow the knee.

--------------------------------------------------

Awesome, praise music. The choir, the pastors, the choir leader and the congregation - we were all in tears before the Lord afterward. It was a very special feeling of the presence of the Holy Spirit.

I love so many of the old hymns already listed and for contemporary Christian music, I love anything by Hillsong and In Christ Alone by the Gettys.

Shortly after 911, I heard this on the radio sung acappella
by some gentleman. I don’t know who, but it was absolutely
the most beautiful and moving thing I’ve ever heard. I have
seen it in our hymnal, but I’m thinking that it may be over
the range of our church choir.
