You basically nailed it. We have an Episcopal minister in the Detroit area who publicly acknowledges he does not believe in God. I asked him why he remained a minister and essentially he said that was his job and as long as the congregation paid him he would remain.
I also think the notoriety attracted him -- the local media would regularly quote him as an authority on Christian matters.
