I always thought that the 6000 years started after Adam and Eve were sent out of the Garden. We do not know how long they were in the garden, nor what was going on outside the garden.

I think most figure out 6000 years by adding up the ages of biblical figures. For example, Adam was 930 years old and so forth and so on...
