So then, all this talk about God not rolling dice with the universe was what? Metaphor or crass pandering?

When a scientist can create an atom, then they can talk about faith being childish. And they can use no, pre-existing raw materials. They have to create all the raw materials.

the Jews are God's chosen peopleThey (the Jews) were chosen by God to bring monotheism to the world and to express it in their culture.
That choosing did not impart upon them any other special status (Jews are not better than other peoples). However, it did impart upon them special duties and responsibilities.
It's like God said "I need some volunteers for a tough mission, so I choose the Jews". They fought the mission and came back with medals.

“the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish.”
Einstein said he was quite religious as a child, and was dismayed when he grew old enough to realize that the Bible was not credible. He said he found it very poingnant that so many people conspired to lead him astray, and that this contributed to his maverick way of thinking.

It would mean that the atom would have to be shattered at will."

Powell said the letter being sold this week gave a clear reflection of Einstein's real thoughts on the subject. " Was this letter faxed from a Kinkos in Texas?

Einstein would probably most accurately be called a Deist. He did believe in a Creator, just not in any specific theology.
A Deist would be perfectly comfortable saying such things. Ben Franklin who said in his autobiography that he was a “thorough Deist” also said “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”.

Well, in the end, this reminds me of that saying in regard to another famous atheist:
“God is dead.” - Nietzsche
“Nietzsche is dead.” - God

“The fool in his heart says that there is no God.”
“The fool in his heart says that there is a God.”
Both are null statements.
