When John Paul II visited us many years ago, he got off the plane and saw a large crowd, mostly screaming women holding up signs that said:
“Welcome Elvis!” “WE LOVE YOU ELVIS!” and so forth.

All along the route to his hotel, the same thing.
Walking throught the lobby, more screaming fans holding up signs, all welcoming Elvis.

He walked into his room, and three beautiful women in bikinis stepped out from the bathroom.

He looked them over, sighed, and sang:

“Well, it’s one for the money, two for the show . . . “.

Why hasn't the ACLU been called in to put a stop to this promotion of a particular religion? Catholicism.

OK Catholics .. I'm not trying to pick a fight with you, but it it is unusual that every manner of Christianity is scoffed, but the promotion of the Papal visit sure seems to be royalized .......

You want the ACLU to step in??? Ping to follow the fireworks.

Uh.....that you should even ask this question shows how far the Constitution's statements on religion have become twisted, deformed and in fact turned 180 degrees from their original intent in the popular consciousness.

Remember, we're talking here about the President simply meeting and talking with the head of one of the world's largest religions. There's a problem with that?

As an aside, should the President be allowed to meet the Queen, who is also head of the Church of England? How about the Dalai Lama?

As to where the ACLU might be, they're skulking around, don't worry. If there was any possible legal angle here which they could have exploited for the purposes of dealing another blow to the free exercise of religion in the public square, they would have done, believe me.

There isn't.

Kids can't wear a t shirt with the words "John 3:16" on it, or a picture of the resurrected Christ.

Sure they can.

Kids in NYC wear Christian t-shirts, in English and Spanish, to school all the time.

Probably 20-30% of NYC schoolkids belong to church youth groups or sports leagues.

I just think it is an eerie symbolism to see a vestured man with outspread arms fawned over as a savior figure.

The Pope is not a "savior figure." He is an apostolic figure - a teacher who tells people about the only real Savior every chance he gets.

What am I not understanding here??? It seems to me anything religious can and could be displayed, worn, spoken, screamed to the high heavens (is that against the rules?) at any location because Congress has passed NO laws either requiring it done so nor have they passed laws that specifically eliminate it from any place...passing either type of these laws would breach the Constitution, but passing no such laws UPHOLDS the Constitution.

Simply put, if Congress does nothing, anything religious goes...anywhere...

Just my opinion..

There's a lot more than that going on, but I agree with your summation.
