Your definition of idolatry is flawed.

And that’s why I’m (still) Catholic ... if you look only at the people, the Church can appear to be a mess. Really a mess, depending on where you look. But I look past that, and see doctrinal consistency since the beginning, and I see a Divine Founder. That Divine Founder (Jesus Christ) made and keeps the Church as a reliable protector of His Truth, and a trustworthy resolver of disputes. Purely local assemblies cannot serve that necessary purpose.

If I had better photoshop skills, I’d put together an image of a baby chicken in front of a keyboard ... or maybe a baby chicken with a Cat-5 cable stuck in the back of its neck.

Well, based on the Popes’ record it would seem God wanted to keep His people in darkness. So when the Pope made the decree that we could give him money to keep our dead family members out of Hell, that was not error? When he burned thousands or perhaps millions for saying what I’m saying, rather, what the Bible says, for translating the Bible into English, was that infallible interpretation?
Maybe the new Popes are infallible and those past Popes weren’t. God didn’t do a very good job of preserving His church then, since humanity existed for 1000-1,500 years with no one to interpret scripture for them.

I am reminded of an exchange I had with another protestant a few days ago that went something like this:
Prot: Why would you say the Pope is perfect?
Me: Uh, I don't; RCC doesn't teach that; and Benedict would probably laugh at the suggestion.

“Purely local assemblies cannot serve that necessary purpose.”
They can and have for 2008 years and survived attacks and intense persecution by Popes and protestants alike.

Is that why there are so many thousands of independent churches with their own peculiar interpretation of what the Bible means?
You do know that the Spirit has one interpretation of the Bible and the Catholic Church is Truth and has been it for over 2000 years.
To: Petronski
Oh, I just make it up because I’m a Catholic-hater.
