Rob Bell Critiques His Critics http://www.apprising.org/archives/2008/03/rob_bell_critiq.html
Doesn't matter if they're angry and mean, Rob... are they right? (YES!)
who’s on venus?
can’t stand him! He is part of the emergent conversation movement and I won’t listen to anything he has to say.
I’ve been transcribing some of his stuff for research for someone else... it’s just like listening to this guy:
Mantra Meditation in the Kriya Yoga Tradition

BTW just so you listen to enough to be able to recognize the signs when they start occurring in people you already listen to. It seems this delusion is sweeping MANY otherwise well-respected and orthodox teachers.
I don’t get it.
Mars Hill is a reference to Acts 17 when Paul was preaching on Mars Hill to the greeks there.
I use his Nooma stuff in Sunday School. He’s out of the box. It helps me to deal with a lot of “Grandfathered-In” Christian kids. A lot of pastors steal his stuff.
Did you notice that? No instruction manual? (for running a church?) What about the Bible? No tools? What about the Bible and good hermeneutics?
So like Shirley MacLaine he took his hands off the wheel...instead of asking the Lord of Scripture what he wanted! Asking HIM to drive.
We have a town here in NC called Mars Hill. At first I thought this was another NC church.
Went to the Mars Hill site and found this almost immediately.
“Most of us have been given great wealth, talent and energy. And God wants us to share it with others who don’t have enough.”
Hmmm...
The Great Apostasy? Two very good supplemental instruction manuals he should read, if he can fit them with the “hundreds of books” he inhales in a given year.

yup. What about sharing the gospel? Rob’s been given the gospel and he doesn’t share it with anyone. Just a cheap counterfeit.
Or he could just read the Bible for once.
He says he does, but I think it’s a trick. I don’t hear much exposition/exegesis going on.
Of course - which is why I referred to those books as supplemental reading :-)

***”I spent days in the woods just staring at trees,” he says. “It began deep in my soul — that I had nothing to prove. I had to die to the need to achieve and impress.”***
I think he would have been better off on his knees in prayer to God, but...?
And this took months to write????
I read his ‘Velvet Elvis’ book. He has some good insights on Jewish rabinical tradition, and when you plug in some of the events of the Gospels, some interesting perspectives emerge. Pretty neat book- but I still won’t go to a church with any kind of full-time hierachy.
Just don’t confuse Rob Bell’s Mars Hill Church with MArk Driscoll’s. They are VERY different.
Now you have to admit, the Bible does't say anything about 'running a church'.
It has a lot to say about our relationships to to others, but running a church in the present day tradition is a completely foreign concept to what Paul did.
We have a habit of projecting it into the scriptures, (I did it for years) but it's just not there.
