Perhaps he could “hover” in the vestibule?

My brother-in-law used to lock my nephew outside of Church and the kid saw the light and decided one day he wanted to come inside and be a Catholic. Worked fine.

Pat’s the one who levitates. He’s fine if James isn’t there, and James is okay if Pat and Vlad aren’t there. Maybe we’ll try attending three Masses once Anoreth can drive!

If Anoreth can reach the pedals, she can drive...

Of course we know that our Holy Father has a brother who is a priest. Not a twin, but I still find it charming and think it would be an encouragement for those in formation.

Didn’t some churches used to provide those paper-lace “coaster” doilies so ladies that forgot or didn’t know could cover their heads?

When I, as a man, see the ladies covering their heads it makes me want to dress better for church because if they can make the sacrifice so can I. So it’s evangelization in a way. Course since I’m always in cassock and surplice I give myself a break. I wear a black, collarless shirt and black slacks. I don’t like the collar sticking out of the cassock, think it’s sloppy.

When I was a kid, our more-Roman-than-Rome parish had two leather boxes in the narthex, one for each side, the lid fit inside the box and had a handle on it. Inside were lace doilies (actual fabric, not paper) and bobby pins for ladies who forgot their hats.

I couldn't wear a mantilla in the choir - if I can ever choose one from that website (I really like several) I will save it for when I'm not singing or visiting.

We tend to dress in black slacks and a black shirt (usually a polo because we have high-neck cassocks) because our choir vestments are wool and VERY hot . . . plus we're in the choir loft and it's even hotter up there. We've invested in two large silent fans, which helps.

After Easter Vigil we were all coming out of the choir vesting area walking back towards the church, and walking the other way through the arcade were Monsignor, Fr. Paul and another priest from downtown who helps out when we've got all the Christmas and Easter crowd in. All in a row and all dressed in their black cassocks and forging forward in a determined way. "Aha!" I said, "The Men In Black!" Monsignor said, "You're all in black, too." "Trying to be inconspicuous, but it doesn't work." The crowning glory was Fr. Paul's jacket, which was black with a Guinness logo on the chest (he's unreconstructed Irish. The Irish in this diocese stick together - somebody in our parish referred to the "Irish Mafia" . . . )

A good opportunity to demonstrate the palms together, 45 degree angle, thumbs crossed prayer position.

If it were socially acceptable, I would drape myself in a cassock all the time. We just got new cassocks, I’m afraid to say. Marian Blue. They look good but...

When I was a young’un (a wee bit ago!), all the young women had “chapel veils” which were “de rigeur.” The young woman got one at her first communion, and the nuns made sure they had them once they got to the 6th grade or so.

Boys had to wear black or dark blue pants to Church. Khaki would have caused a stroke to most in the pews!

For the second year running, we had no altar boy for the Mass on Easter Sunday. Since we ring the Sanctus bells at our Parish, I once volunteered to serve as an altar “man” when the lads don’t show up. I served Mass into high school and could easily “wing it.”

I suggested a cassock and surplice but our Irish priest didn’t like that (he may have felt I would look too ordained!). He suggested some kind of special robe. The point of fact is, however, the poor priest had to forego having an altar boy/man for the Easter Mass again. The Pastor does not allow girls to take that position nor to serve as EMOHC. He is definitely “old school.” The two kids who usually serve that Mass go to the Tridentine Easter Vigil and never show up for Easter Sunday.

That’s it! Now all she needs is the “I’ve got a hairball!” cough ...

I don’t quite follow. In these parts the altar boys always wear the cassock & surplice. The Deacon adds a stole, and the priest wears a chasuble.

We have "altar girls" but not very many.

Rather than bar them altogether, the deacon in charge runs the group on paramilitary lines, which discourages most of the girls.

My daughter is an odd one, she loved it. But she's not a very girly girl . . . she was an altar server in our old ECUSA parish and has always taken it very seriously (she tells me that the adjustment from Anglican to Roman Rite was pretty severe . . . ) She made the commitment to join the "Altar Server Elite" which involves promising to serve on a regular schedule through graduating from high school. They have an investment ceremony and are awarded special pins and a really cool bracelet . . . black leather and old silver and what looks like a Roman coin but has a cross stamped on it.

The deacon very kindly allowed her to "do a Melba" when she was home from college for Easter. They were short on servers for the Easter Vigil, so she jumped in and helped.

She was absolutely thrilled that she got to do the incense!!!! (clouds of thick smoke filling the entire sanctuary . . . including the choir loft . . . )

Life's embarassing moments . . .

. . . one of my less socially acceptable talents is that I can exactly imitate the sound of a cat coughing up a hairball.

. . . I was demonstrating this to another cat-loving friend when the firm's senior partner walked by . . . " . . . oh, no, I'm fine, just a frog in my throat . . . "
