This thread is not postulating either one way or another. We are sharing things that are meaningful to us spiritually.

Hossana!
Blessed be the rock,
and may the God of my salvation be exalted!

hehe I know that one too! :)

There was one a few weeks ago that got positively 'religious' about worship music. Glad to see that's not happening again. Be blessed!

Master, the tempest is raging!
The billows are tossing high!
The sky is o’ershadowed with blackness,
No shelter or help is nigh;
Carest Thou not that we perish?
How canst Thou lie asleep,
When each moment so madly is threatening
A grave in the angry deep?

The winds and the waves obey Thy will,
Peace, be still!
Whether the wrath of the storm tossed sea,
Or demons or men, or whatever it be
No waters can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean, and earth, and skies;
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, be still! Peace, be still!
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, peace, be still!

Master, with anguish of spirit
I bow in my grief today;
The depths of my sad heart are troubled
Oh, waken and save, I pray!
Torrents of sin and of anguish
Sweep o’er my sinking soul;
And I perish! I perish! dear Master
Oh, hasten, and take control.

The winds and the waves obey Thy will,
Peace, be still!
Whether the wrath of the storm tossed sea,
Or demons or men, or whatever it be
No waters can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean, and earth, and skies;
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, be still! Peace, be still!
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, peace, be still!

Master, the terror is over,
The elements sweetly rest;
Earth’s sun in the calm lake is mirrored,
And heaven’s within my breast;
Linger, O blessèd Redeemer!
Leave me alone no more;
And with joy I shall make the blest harbor,
And rest on the blissful shore.

The winds and the waves obey Thy will,
Peace, be still!
Whether the wrath of the storm tossed sea,
Or demons or men, or whatever it be
No waters can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean, and earth, and skies;
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, be still! Peace, be still!
They all shall sweetly obey Thy will,
Peace, peace, be still!

Wonderful! Thank you!

"Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, Calling, oh sinner, come home." That was one I was "hearing" over and over, tried to find and posted the wrong one night before last. This is the right one and I love it, too!

Jesus calls us, o'er the tumult ... I love the way the 2nd line just *sweeps* up to a crescendo. Yes, a good one!

Wish I knew the melody on the "higher ground" one. I'm singing along with the words to all of these. Many are the "rollicking" kind I grew up with.

Also wanted to find the one I heard yesterday by a black choir in NOLA on some Mardi Gras coverage on TV - it wasn't familiar, but I loved it. I thought it was "Satisfied," but when I looked up the lyrics, that wasn't the right hymn.

There's a midi to Higher Ground here:
http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/h/i/highergr.htm

It's a little too fast IMHO, but it's the right tune.

Yes, "God of our fathers." I didn't remember that, but I recall the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." That song just so stirs me when I hear it.

It has always brought mixed feelings because my heritage was to not sing it, even when it was played in church. I had to be an adult before I allowed myself to really love it as I do now, though I still segue into "Gloria! Gloria!" and then "Dixie" in my mind or under my breath, after it's finished.

"In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea ..." just makes me swoon. And I weep at "As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free ..." - but I change that last "die" to "live" - "let us live to make men free ..." ooohhhh

I know that spirit feeling of which you speak.

I'm always pleasantly surprised when a group of people just spontaneously starts singing "Amazing Grace" in places like candelight vigils or when something sad has happened - people who normally wouldn't sing a song of worship otherwise. They may not know all the words, but it just comes out and they join right in ... it's a great bonding among diverse individuals. Love to see that.

The Prayer of St. Francis was my favorite as a child and still is today. My other favorite is On Eagle's Wings. I'm not exactly overly religious but those two always make me feel like I'm going to cry.

I like that! Even if I don't know the tune, the words sort of sing themselves.

Thanks! No sound card on this PC - sorry. Got it free from my computer repair person, but it was someone's workplace 'puter previously and they couldn't have sound in their office.

My other two are both "under the weather" and I can't fire one up to hear this! But I *will* when I can!

One musical online resource that I use a lot is:

http://www.mudcat.org/threads.cfm

It is primarily a "Folk" Music forum, and accordingly has a somewhat liberal leaning (although not as bad, IMHO, as it used to be) but the "Digitrad" Data Base is a tremendous archive of all sorts of musical info and debate, including a lot about Gospel / Spiritual music.

I have been collecting Christian music from the late 1700s on up, and have posted a lot of my findings there if anyone is interested.

Some of that old stuff is really beautiful and touching, and as far as I can tell has been essentially forgotten for 100 years or more.

One of these days I'd like to record an album of some of it, using my "period" instruments.

Here's one song that I wrote and recorded:

"NIGHT IN JERUSALEM"
"Uncle Jaque"

All day long in streets of darkness, Lord
I've failed to pass the test;
Fallen far short of your glory, Lord
though I've tried my level best...
There's lots more I need to do here, Lord;
Much more I need to learn;
Though my weary heart for sanctuary
frequently does yearn.

(Refrain):

In my dreams the golden spires of your Temple meet the sun;
In your streets the children dancing;
Hear them sing, and laugh, and run....
Your sweet flowers soothe my spirit,
Though it's not time to come home -
Let me spend this night...
Dear Lord....
In Jerusalem.

City of God; city of David;
Priceless pearl beyond worth;
Shining light upon Mount Zion -
Capital city of the Earth;
Let me drink from your crystal fountains,
wander through your rainbow halls;
Hear the trumpet sound the Sabbath
From your alabaster walls!

Ref.

Say there Pilgrim; have you seen her?
Shining high upon the hill -
Ancient city of our Fathers -
Are her banners flying still?
Or when back towards the Kingdom
wandering souls choose to start -
Is Jerusalem that city
God rebuilds within our heart?

Ref.

Back around 1989 while I was in hospital recuperating from surgery I looked out over the lights of Portland (ME) and despite my general aversion to cities, it was sort of pretty.

It made me wonder what the "New Jerusalem" might look like, and how beautiful it must be - then this song sort of "unrolled" in my head.

Nice!

Yep, I discovered the Mudcat Cafe a long time ago. They are an excellent music source.

I wrote this yesterday, to the tune of the Christ Child Lullaby:

Lamb of God

The moon was bright above the trees
The shadows dark beneath the leaves,
The night you fell down on your knees
To pray in grief alone.

refrain:
Jesus, Lamb of God
Jesus, Lamb of God
Jesus, Lamb of God
Jesus, Lamb of God

The night was dark like lost man's sin,
The grief you bore, their pain within,
You cried out "Not my will, " and then
Salvation's time was born.

refrain

The time had come to walk that way
Of sorrow, pain and and sad dismay
And in your death to take away
Man's destiny to die.

refrain

They nailed you bloody to the tree,
And you forgave in agony,
And by your death, you set us free,
My Savior and my God.

refrain

My Light, my Lord, my God on high,
Amazed at Heaven's love, I sigh,
That you for me would choose to die
To bring me home at last.

refrain

to the tune of the Christ Child Lullaby - tune and original song here:

An uplifting hymn about trust;

...ON EAGLES' WINGS...

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,
Who abide in his shadow for life,
Say to the Lord:
"My refuge, my rock in whom I trust!"

And he will raise you up on eagles' wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of his hand.

Snares of the fowler will never capture you,
And famine will bring you no fear;
Under his wings your refuge,
His faithfulness your shield.

And he will raise you up on eagles' wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of his hand.

For to his angels he's given a command
To guard you in all of your ways;
Upon their hands they will bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot a-gainst a stone.

And he will raise you up on eagles' wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of his hand.

Hail the day so long expected,
Hail the year of full release.
Zion's walls are now erected,
And her watchmen publish peace.
Through our Shiloh's wide dominion,
Hear the trumpet loudly roar,
Babylon is fallen to rise no more.

Babylon is fallen, fallen, fallen
Babylon is fallen, to rise no more.

All her merchants stand with wonder,
What is this that comes to pass:
Murm'ring like the distant thunder,
Crying, "Oh alas, alas."
Swell the sound, ye kings and nobles,
Priest and people, rich and poor;
Babylon is fallen to rise no more.

Blow the trumpet in Mount Zion,
Christ shall come a second time;
Ruling with a rod of iron
All who now as foes combine.
Babel's garments we've rejected,
And our fellowship is o'er,
Babylon is fallen to rise no more.

From Sacred Harp
Tune: W. E. Chute, 1878
Meter: Particular Meter: 8,7,8,7,8,7
