No. They knew who they are.As charity "thinketh no evil" (1 Cor 13.5), it would seem wrong to attempt to judge a man damned except in the case of clear divine revelation (cf. Num 16.33, St. Matthew 26.24, St. Jude 7).
Since, then, without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb 11, 6.) and reach the fellowship of his sons and daughters, it follows that no one can ever achieve justification without it, neither can anyone attain eternal life unless he or she perseveres in it to the end. (Dei Filius Ch. 3 §9)
The proper advice would have been to advise the mother to pray that her agnostic, unbelieving son would convert before his death. Since God is eternal, he can hear such prayers and apply them to the past. I am sure this is what the objectors to Msgr. Mannion mean.

I challenge you to make your group slander specific. Or is it just a lie? Name names. Since you are speaking for others to the detriment of their characters, WHO SPECIFICALLY would tell the woman her son IS rotting in hell?
Who is it, sinkspur. Liberal Democrat tactics may seem good to you, but they don't fly here. Who specifically would do what you accuse us of? Are you going to name names or just leave the unjust group slander lying upon us all?

So you have made your false witness and will not correct it, eh.
Thought so.
Sinkspur says that many around here would just tell this mother that her son is burning in hell. He leaves the blanket slander on all of us and refuses to specify as to exactly who would do this evil thing. Are YOU on his list of evil? Would YOU do it? Inquiring minds want to know.

Routine. He does that all the time.

Sink, you asked,
Is this how traditionalists rally adherents to their cause? By their willingness to put people in HELL? Putting people in hell is a promise made by the Holy Trinity........
Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.
He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. -- Matthew 13:36-42
Just a little of the many verses of Holy Scripture the V2 New Church ignores at their peril and from which they will suffer the eternal pain of hell.
You can't be a Scripture cherry picker and a traditional Roman Catholic.
A traditional Roman Catholic finds favor with God only when he strives to adhere to the Almighty's Commandments and Scriptural direction, and as necessary, seeks forgiveness from God through a priest for sins he fervently regrets.
A Scripture cherry picker is a pretender. A fraud. A sinner. An abomination before God and man, and will likely go to hell.

Thank goodness I don't read that paper. Mannion's "logic" is enough to make one tear one's hair out. There was a man who was one of Hitler's few friends as a teenager. He said that Hitler truly loved his mother, and she loved him. I suppose Mannion would offer that as "proof" that Hitler is in heaven.
Balderdash....to say the least.

>>I guess God no longer determines who goes to Heaven or Hell. It's all in our control: if we love somebody they go to Heaven. If they love us back, we go to Heaven. God is out of the picture.<<
I would say this: True prayer occurs because God calls us to prayer. There is false prayer (believing that we can assume power by praying for someone or something, thus turning prayer away from being submission to God, and into magic's vile mimicry of Christianity), and false love (caring for someone as a means of fulfilling our own desires). But if it is God who has called us to pray for someone, nothing will be denied he who prays.

An answer such as that is sure to drive many away from the faith; the strongest will press on towards God in spite of your answer, not because of it. Thank God, I have never heard a preist utter something so cold-hearted as that. It would be kinder to say it more directly:
"Too bad, he's frying in Hell. Got a problem with that? Fry in Hell yourself."

>>Catholic priests should not be going around teaching that "All ya need is love."<<
No, they *do* need to preach incessently the power of love, for God IS Love, and he is all-powerful. They also, however, need to teach what true love is, and the need for the spiritual charities (i.e., "reproach the sinner," etc.)

"By telling her not to worry, Mannion is causing the mother to deprive her son of needed prayers."
Now THERE's a good answer! By his rejection of the faith, your son has deprived himself of the assurance of Christ's salvation. But through God's mercy, all things are possible; pray, therefore, greiving mother, that his soul has been saved. Do not cease your works of reparation, to participate in this miracle, that you may have confidence in it.

One could argue that the rich man and the poor man are both in different chambers of Hades, since the Resurrection had not ocurred. But that would be a stretch.

>>I think Hitler's mom loved him... terrible thought huh?<<
I bet she didn't. Have you not seen parents with a shocking, horrific lack of love for their children? Or who call all manners of outrages and obscenities against human dignity "love." (As in, "I only beat my kid senseless because I love him.")

It is hard to believe so many priests could be so poorly educated in the faith. No one is saying not to comfort a grieving mother, but why can't the truth be spoken? The truth is comfort.
To: johnb2004
There is no comfort to be found in "your son is roasting in Hell, and you will join him if you got a problem with that." No comfort at all. It is pure cruelty.

I said the truth. The truth is no one may say where he is unless he is canonized. The truth is he needs prayers. The truth is we must all pray for the departed. What are you talking about?
To: johnb2004
Oh, I am sorry... I mixed you up with someone else... No, your answer was quite excellent!
