When a tribe or people or nation accepts Orthodoxy, as did Greece, Serbia and Russia, for example, that Christ-incarnating force transforms the society, shaping its soul, its ethos and its values. Some comments on being ethnic and Orthodox - please reply as you feel moved.
Ethnicity is an inevitable part of the journey into the Orthodox church.
For example, there is no possible way to tease apart the two issues of Russian culture and Orthodox culture. They are one and the same more than they differ.
The atheist Russian is more "Orthodox" than he or she realizes, perhaps, because of the culture in which he or she was raised.
It quite naturally leads from this that an entire country which has been led to embrace a culture of Orthodoxy, should then be treasured as such, and guarded, and attempts made to preserve her as such. From here it is only a short step to the elevation of that country to a status of "holy".
I propose that this, being a good thing of itself, is also a stepping stone into our sin of nationalism.
I welcome your comments.
