If a company really can't find skilled workers in this country they should be allowed to hire competent workers from another country. On the other hand they should be required to demonstrate that the workers they hire are doing work that no available US workers can do. Maybe if we put it on the same basis as the civil rights laws and let people sue because the have been discriminated against for being US citizens the companies would have a chance to prove their case.
I've worked for companies which went to some ridiculous extremes to write job descriptions for the purpose of excluding US applicants. I never saw any foreign worker hired for a job that couldn't be done by a US citizen. Sometimes it doesn't even make sense in dollars and cents. They often pay foreign workers extra for living expenses, transportation and family allowances.

Thanks for the informative post.
According to Lois Peterson of the National Academy of Sciences, she received 102 requests for help from space scientists unable to attend the event because they had not received their visas.
There is a big, big difference between attending an event, which I think is OK, and taking a U.S. citizen's job. I don't care how talented an alien worker is, I suspect they are hired because they are cheaper. And don't tell me to work cheaper, the (so-called) Friend of the Court won't let me cut my child support!

I thought the liberal media were saying there is an unemployment problem.
My sense of things is that it's pretty hard right now for young people coming out of college to find jobs in their chosen areas. I doubt that Houston has a significant labor shortage. If they do, I'm sure they can find competent people from out of state.

Maybe because the real goal is balkinazation of USA. Picture many fighting factions which can't/won't unite. Further erosion of culture etc...til there's nothing left of good ole USA. Next civil war. Got World Govt.?

We have a nearly 7% unemployment rate. Lots of very talented, qualified engineers, technical and other workers are unemployed here.
This article is a crock. We don't need more foreigners. We need to put our own back to work.

That is why the Bureau of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is putting every Houstonian at risk by effectively insulating us from the rest of the world. Why, that's one of the legitimate functions of the national government, suger pie. The states, and that must include cities within those states, ceeded the right to negotiate and deal directly with foreign governments, i.e. "the rest of the world", to the central power.
Note: when she says "best" people, she means "cheapest" people. The best people are Americans.

HP cuts 200 jobs at facility in Houston
Houston Chronicle Tuesday, October 7, 2003
Hewlett-Packard cut 200 jobs at its Houston offices Monday as part of its promise to get back on track after reporting disappointing third- quarter results.
The workers were in HP's enterprise systems group, an unprofitable division that includes storage devices, servers and software.
The Palo Alto company, which merged with Compaq Computer Corp. last year, had said it would slash 1,300 positions after missing Wall Street expectations for sales and earnings in the third quarter.
Those cuts were in addition to 3,500 previously announced cuts.
The enterprise systems division and HP's consulting group were expected to absorb most of the latest round of cuts.
HP lost $70 million in the third quarter, compared with a loss of $252 million in the same quarter a year ago and a loss of $7 million in the prior quarter.
The company blamed the results, in part, on business seasonality and slow sales in the quarter.
HP Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Carly Fiorina said all of its major divisions, including enterprise systems, would be profitable in the fourth quarter.

Well, obviously we need to better immigration lawyers to immigrate from abroad to Houston to help old Bag out. Apparently Ann isn't one of the best and brightest if TEMPORARY visa workers are having problems staying here indefinitely.

the weasel word here is "qualified". Qualified means the ability to work for $0.61 an hour, on average (China)...etc
