Beirut, prior to the Syrian invasion in early/mid 1970s, was considered the "Paris of the Middle East", not to mention
the center of banking, relative stability, etc.

Can't have a successful somewhat real democratic republic in the middle of dictatorial mayhem.

You are kidding, right? Lebanon is part of "Greater Syria" and has been for most of the past three decades.
