Roadside Bomb Wounds Three U.S. Soldiers in Iraq
Sun October 12, 2003 08:35 AM ET
TIKRIT, Iraq (Reuters) - A roadside bomb exploded outside a sprawling U.S. base in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit Sunday, wounding three soldiers, one seriously, an Army spokesman said.
The explosives were detonated just outside a gate at the headquarters for Task Force Ironhorse as two U.S. Humvee vehicles were passing, said First Lt. Don Calderwood, a spokesman for the 1st Brigade, 22nd Infantry Battalion.
"The explosion was sandwiched between the two Humvees, and blew out one of the windshields," he said.
Calderwood said two soldiers, one in a serious condition, were taken to the base hospital. One was slightly wounded and treated at a nearby aid station. Calderwood had no details on the type of explosive used. Roadside bombs, often made from grenades or shells, are a favorite weapon by insurgents battling the U.S. occupation.
Guerrilla attacks have killed 94 U.S. soldiers since President Bush declared major combat over on May 1.

Once again as I have read, and as IDF officers have pointed out, the US needs to switch to armored jeeps, rather then open Humvees. IDF troops in the territories come under similar bombs and RPGs, and most of the time, they are uninjured (there is some damage however), due to the strong armor protecting their vehicles, and the fact they are not open.
Israel also, at times, uses Humvees, but usually on the Northern border, not in the territories.
This is how Israel's Humvees look like:
Here is another type of vehicle Israel uses, mostly in the territories, notice that it is not open:
M-240
Here is what the we use in Iraq, look how vulnerable they are:
